This is yo ‘Lazy people want much, but get little. Those who work hard will prosper.’

By the age of 16, Ramona Acosta Bañelos was married. By 18 she had two children, but at this time was deserted by her husband. Poverty stricken in Mexico, left to raise her two children, untrained in any profession and unable to speak English, she had a dream…

She made her way to Los Angeles and with her last $7 dollars got a taxi ride to see a distant relative. Refusing to live on charity from others, she found a job as a dishwasher and a second job making tortillas. Working many hours, she eventually saved $500. With this, she invested in her own tortilla machine. Over time and hard work and as well as studying, she became the owner of Ramona Mexican food products – the largest Mexican food product in the world.

The story goes further as Ramona was to become the 34th Treasurer of the United States – appointed by the President Richard Nixon, hand picked by Eisenhower, as she exemplified the American dream. Eisenhower was quoted to say;

“We succeed only as we identify in life or in war or in anything, a single overriding objective and make all other considerations bend to that one objective”.

So what is unique about leaders and the Strategies of Marketing? They know what it takes to prosper. Granted it is hard work, but they are committed and passionate to pursue a vision, a dream, to reach their goals. They stand out from the crown as they focus on what they want, driven by desire to succeed as well as to stay the course no matter how long it takes. One thing successful leaders don’t do and that is to give up.

So are you on a mission? If so what is driving you? Why do you get out of bed in morning? Are you hungry to succeed? Do you have a vision?

If tomorrow you were appointed as the CEO of a large company, what would you do first? Would you start with a vision, and if so, how would you go out to develop one? More importantly, how would you sell the vision? What foundations will you build upon? What practices would you let go?

Jack Welsh, CEO of GE for many years, was a believer of action learning. He had a game plan to get his people to think as leaders and these could be perceived as desirable qualities of leadership. Here is way to express such qualities:

1. Look within you. What do you get excited about?

2. Look behind you. What has life taught you to this point? Life provides you with the wisdom. Don’t live in the past, but learn from the past. What does your past tell you about your future – good or bad?

3. Look around you.Who can you call upon to help you? Fulfil your destiny with the right people in your life.

4. Look ahead.Aim for a goal? A goal is set by having a vision.

5. Look beside you. What resources are available to you right now – system, tools, books, CDs, conferences, mentors etc.

Do you know your vision, if so, what do you see? The vision must fulfil your destiny! If your vision is not bigger than you, then you are not thinking big enough? Think big!

Ramona may have started with a number of good small business ideas, but with great vision, look where it got her. You too can make a difference today.

There are a number of ways to advertise your product or services on the internet, but knowing which to choose can be a minefield. Paid advertising works as long as you keep paying, but organic marketing should also be seriously considered. Use these techniques to promote your ideas working from home to a new level.

Here are the top internet marketing strategies to leverage the internet to get great results.

1. Pay-Per-Click (PCC)

With PCC, master the art and you could do really well and get great results, but get it wrong you could soon end up in deep water. You need to know your keyword strategy and something you do need to understand and get right. Common keywords will be expensive so it is better to look for long tail keywords as these will be cheaper. Remember PCC is like being in an auction. You will be competing for the top spot against others and this can be costly.

There is an art to this and would suggest you do your homework prior to diving in.

To really make this work, you will need a unique Google compliant landing page or web site adding value to the searcher. Equally you need an offer leading to sales to cover your costs.

2. Content Marketing

Content is king on the internet. Google is slapping sites that are not unique, add value or have great content.

Blogging is a great way to achieve this whether you blog though sites owned by others, e.g. Blogger, Squidoo or whether you establish a site where you own the domain name. Publishing articles and press releases is also a great method to put out content. You do need to use sites that have authority and hence ranked in the search engines.

Produce a great blog, article or press release and this alone could end up on page 1 in the search listings and would have cost you very little. This is organic marketing at its best.

As with PCC, whatever is put out must be relevant. Little expertise is required to do this, can cost virtually very little, but is a great way to put out content.

One of the advantages of this method is that it is not dependant on paying a fee and your post could remain in place for a number of years.

3. Social Media

Using Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc is a whole new game on the internet. Social media has really taken off with Facebook leading the way. Not only can you post content, but have the opportunities to display paid ads.

In respect to social media, you are looking to make connections with people and this is done through being interestingly sociable and real. This is about connecting with people and the sites must be treated as such. If you fill these sites with spammy ads then you will only put people off.

The social media platforms help with brand equity and can show people you are a real person having real conversations.

Once you have a number of followers, then it’s time to market, but done in a subtle way – which is a skill in itself.

4. Videos and Podcast

Videos do really well. Using say Youtube is a great media platform, but equally there are other such sites. No matter what you search, you generally see a video on the first page.

There are different types of videos ranging from you being the star to a power point presentation. Keep them short and to the point. By all means make them entertaining and if marketing add value.

Podcasts also work and there is a market for this through sites like iTunes. If people are downloading music, people are also looking for exciting content through their audio players.

5. Email Marketing

This works really well once you have a lot of leads and interest building up into a list. Using a method of autoresponders is a way of setting up a mailing list against emails you wish to circulate. Once set up can operate automatically. Aweber is a great system to use, but there are cheaper versions and worth looking around.  It is important to keep in touch with your contacts and autoresponders is effective and a must have.

Although this article only outlines a number of great strategies, leaning and making it work can be overwhelming, but equally can be fun.

The best advice is to have a plan of action. Start with one or two methods, take your time and focus on what you feel comfortable with. Don’t chase too many rabbits. How do you feed an elephant? One bite at a time.

There is too much competition not to be focused. Play to win and expect to get results. Expect to get traffic to you site. Put in massive action, appear on page 1 in the listing and you will be a winner.

Goal setting has been around for some time and the concept may have passed its sell by date – or has it?

In any business, whether in a large corporate business, a small brick and mortar business or pursuing best business ideas from home, staying the course can be very difficult. You have a vision and inspired by the results that could be obtained should you be successful. This could be to ensure a pay rise, a bonus, increased profits or just something to be gained as a personal achievement.

There are many gurus and books that preach the concept of setting goals to help you stay focused. You may have heard all this before and have an opinion that it sounds great in theory, but in reality is something else. Because of this view, in the business world the concept of goal setting is starting to get a bad reputation. Goals may be set, but very few are actually followed up. Maybe there is a sense of fear – if set then one should do! It becomes a chore forced upon by management. Goal setting is not something people want to do.

Let’s look at goal setting in a different way. Let’s look at the concept of setting objectives and then to establish a strategy in order to meet each objective. An objective is something you really want to achieve. Each objective has one single action that is clear, realistic, measurable, challenging, but attainable. For example: ‘To increase sales by 10% within 6 months’. The objective does not articulate how you will get there but a case of what you aim to achieve.

All the time the objectives must be aligned with your personal brand – being loyal to your personal brand first.

The objectives must be result orientated and not activity based. Stating ‘I will make 10 calls a day’ is activity orientated where as the example above ‘to increase sales by 10% within 6 months’ is result orientated’. Can you see the difference? It’s about what you can achieve as oppose what you can do.

The list of objectives should not be too long and a good guide to this is that you should be able to memorise all of them.

To be able to accomplish each objective, you do need to understand the why? Why do I need to achieve this? The stronger the reason, the better chance you will have in developing a strategy in order to achieve it. Behind each objective is your personal motivation and drive!

Let’s now create a strategy by answering five questions:

  1. Identify your most important business objective
  2. Why do you work to achieve your objective?
  3. What resources will you need to achieve your objective?
  4. With your resources, what is your plan of action?
  5. How will you measure success for your objectives?
Let’s now look at strategies. This is where you would consider the resources needed to help you on your way to meet the objectives. Whether this be knowledge, training, new software for the computer etc? The strategy will help to define the steps to be taken. These steps could be defined as milestones – activities to be completed on the way to reach your objective. Better still; why not celebrate when each milestone is accomplished.

Your strategies in some cases will need to be flexible and be able to evolve. You will learn on the way so redirecting your plan is part of the course. Remember, there will be successes as well as failures.

On your journey, it is important to occasionally sit back and take an overview. Get out of the trench and hover above where you are at. This is a good way to keep proactive as you will be looking at where you are and where you need to be. You can make adjustments accordingly. What generally happens if you do not take the time to reflect is that you will end up in crises mode – being reactive.

Remember though, ‘you can’t control what you can’t control’.

Throughout, stay true to the very reason why you are aiming to achieve each objective, but ultimately the strategies to help you reach your goal!
